Best cup of coffee at home

Words by Martin Hudak

Martin Hudak is a multi-competition and award-winning bartender but his first love is coffee. As he says, "There are many professional bartenders out there with respect and focus towards spirits, homemade ingredients, ice, Japanese tools etc etc ...but when we talking about coffee we take it for granted."

"I wanna demonstrate how to make the best cup of coffee and appreciate this beautiful liquid." So, over to Martin:

For any good cup of coffee at home you will need:

1. Freshly roasted coffee bean

- two weeks from roasting date good, but after two months not good
- beans better than powder
- know the roaster and know as much as you can about coffee origins and processing

2. Tools

- kettle - can be normal tea kettle - remember to use filtered water
- V60 - Chemex - Aeropress etc - as soon as you have paper filters and you understand how to use it
- scale - it's good to be precise
- grinder - hand one or electronic one - or buy powdered coffee but store it properly
- cups

3. Make sure you bend ribbed side of paper filter - it will fit better inside V60.

4. Rinse your paper filter to remove papery taste.

5. Weigh 17g of grounded coffee and place it inside of V60 - poke a small hole in the middle of the coffee bed.

6. Pour 30g of 90*C water slowly in the middle of coffee bed - let it drip for 30s - this is called Blooming.

7. Second pour start from middle and go slowly in circles to the sides till you reach 120g.

8. Third pour do once water runs down and point stream only in the middle till you reach 220g.

9. Once all water runs down your coffee bed should be flat and even.

10. Whole brewing shouldn't take longer then 4 minutes as you want to avoid bitterness, tannins and extra caffeine.

11. Don't throw away used coffee - keep it on side for later (see last picture).

12. Enjoy your coffee same way as wine or spirits.

13. Try to evaluate smell and taste and play around with it.

14. When temperature drops down, coffee taste will change a lot.

15. Now back to your leftover coffee grounds.

16. Create easy home made coffee scrub for your body:

- 1/2 cup of used coffee - still wet better
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar - organic better
- 1/2 cup of coconut oil
- 1tbs of vanilla extract

- mix it all well and store it in the fridge

17. Use your scrub after your morning work out and coffee or anytime during the day.

18. Coffee will heal your body from inside and outside.
