Auchentoshan is one of the three last operating lowland distilleries and is also distinguished by being the only Scotch whisky distillery to triple distil all its whisky.
Unlike other Scotch whisky regions, triple distillation was commonplace in lowland distilleries due to many distilleries in the region also distilling grains other than just malted barley. Of the trio of Lowland distilleries that survive, Auchentoshan is the only one still triple distilling - it is also the only distillery in Scotland to triple distil all its production. These two reasons alone make Auchentoshan an essential listing on any properly all-encompassing malt whisky menu.
The Auchentoshan distillery lies at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills just off the A82 between Glasgow and Loch Lomond - a mere 20 minutes from Glasgow. Along with Bladnoch and Glenkinchie it is one of the last three lowland distilleries still operating.
