The Appleton Estate, the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica, has been in operation since at least 1749 and is now owned by Wray & Nephew. It is situated in the middle of the island in the lush Nassau Valley through which the Black River flows. The company’s sugar cane fields cover 11,000 acres of the valley and the large plant on the estate, which processes the cane to produce sugar, also includes the famous distillery which converts the by-product molasses into rum.

Late 2007 – Change of owner
Lascelles deMercado & Co., the company which operates Wray & Nephew was the subject of a stake purchase bid by Angostura Holdings, owned by Trinidad's CL Financial conglomerate.

2008 – Change of U.S. distributor
In 2008 Kobrand Corp. assumed the distribution of the Appleton brand of rums from Brown-Forman.

September 2012 – Change of owner
Italy’s Gruppo Campari acquired 81.4% of Lascelles deMercado & Co., the company which operates Wray & Nephew from CL Financial for some US$415 million.
