Often abbreviated to Sam Adams, this beers name honours Samuel Adams, an American patriot famous for his role in the American Revolution and Boston Tea Party, and reputedly also a brewer.

A Vienna-style lager, the recipe was developed in 1860 by Louis Koch who sold it under the name Louis Koch Lager until Prohibition, resuming after Repeal until the early 1950s. In 1984, Jim Koch, followed his family's Louis Koch Lager recipe and brewed what would become Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen. He abandoned his job at Boston Consulting Group and teamed up with fellow Harvard graduates, Harry Rubin and Lorenzo Lamadrid to found their beer company. After Joseph Owades had polished the recipe they launched Samuel Adams Boston Lager on Patriot's Day April 1985 at a re-creation of the first battle of the American Revolution.

In mid-February 2012, The Boston Beer Company announced that England's Shepherd Neame Brewery will brew Samuel Adams Boston Lager for sale in the UK. Previously, Shepherd Neame where the UK importers of USA brewed Samuel Adams in 355ml US-format bottles.
