Matured for a minimum of nine years in a combination of 80% ex-bourbon barrels and 20% sherry hogsheads before vatting and finishing for one final year in first fill oloroso sherry seasoned casks.
Sampled on 04/11/2018
Clear, light to mid-golden amber.
Barley water, leather, green apple, fino sherry and maple with fruit cake, light peat smoke chocolate and zesty orange. Charcoal emerges with water, along with faint kiwi fruit and dried pineapple.
Roasted barley, barley water and red apple with rich blackberry, liquorice, herbs, cracked black pepper and green ginger wine. With water: faintly buttery with sharp pineapple, toasted almond and faint metalic note.
Green apple and herbal spice with light peat, faint chocolate, aniseed and pear drops.
Described by its makers as having a "classic pre-1960s Speyside character", referring to Benromach 10 Year Old's light peaty character. We liked the sample sent in March 2015 so much that we purchased a bottle. That proved disappointing with faint metallic notes and lacked the richness of that 2015 sample and subsequent samples received in April 2016, October 2016, March 2017 and November 2018. However, we consider this a good value for money malt with pleasing barley and fruity flavours. Perhaps we were just unlucky with the bottle we purchased.
