Rums from Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados aged for up to seven years are blended to make Captain Morgan, named after Henry Morgan, the famous buccaneer and Governor of Jamaica.
Born in Glamorgan and the son of a yeoman, while still a boy he caught a ship from Bristol to Barbados and joined the English army. There followed many exploits which eventually led to him being knighted by Charles II and appointed Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. Captain Morgan died on 8th August 1688 – after drinking himself to death - and was buried in the cemetery of Port Royal.
In 1945 Seagrams Ltd set up Captain Morgan Rum Distillers in Jamaica. The brand is now owned by Diageo.
