The Espresso Martini is itself a riff, by its creator, on his earlier Vodka Espresso. Indeed, the Espresso Martini is a cocktail that lends itself to variation...
I do an Espresso Martini with gin, which works just as well and gives an interesting depth of flavour twist on the original. Especially if you use an orange gin like Tanqueray Sevilla.
A lot of good riffs to try though i've recently found how good the black seal rum & monin chocolate syrup combo is

I fully agree Grappa is great as the base spirit in an Espresso Martini. I tend to favour Nardini’s Mandorla variant. Intensely almond flavoured and a hefty 50% abv it avoids the overwhelming sweetness that ruins most Amaretto Espresso recipes. I really don’t agree with your Moscato preference when using non-aged grappa, but then I wouldn’t would I?
Hi Nick. Agreed, Nardini’s Mandorla is delicious and works well with amaretto. (Also a tasty rinse after an espresso!) For the benefit of others, I should declare your relationship to Nardini and that Nardini doesn’t make a Moscato Grappa. I favour Moscato due to its generous floral notes.
