I just made this drink, using the Amer Picon substitute from the Truffles on the Rocks YouTube channel (which has worked for me in the Brooklyn), and I enjoyed it. I would definitely make it again and serve it to guests.
This is a Sweet Martini with Amer Picon and Angostura orange bitters as a bittering agent, and it's an improvement on the traditional Sweet Martini. (Angostura orange bitters are gentian-based, so I wouldn't use a substitute where this brand is specified, even though I usually use Regan's in Martinis. The Truffles on the Rocks Amer Picon substitute specifies Angostura orange bitters.)
Very surprised this cocktail only scores a 4 from discerning drinkers. I give it a 5+ but maybe the lower score has to do with sourcing Amer Picon and using a substitute? Unable to source Amer Picon in Canada, I lucked into cycling with a Brit who was an accountant with Diageo working in the Netherland before the Picon brand was sold to Campari. On retirement he kindly gifted me a bottle (as well as both Orange and Lemon Amer Bière; not sure what to make with those. Suggestions welcome!).
I made this a few months ago and really liked it. A 4 star drink
Made it again today but split the gin to be 50/50 navy strength and regular gin. Plus also split the vermouth to be 50/50 Carpano and Dolin Rouge. Absolute belter. 5+ stars. Might even introduce a drop or two of cacao bitters next time
Ok, this was FANTASTIC! I “secured” my first bottle of Amer Picon in Ruth’s states and this is my FIRST drink I made with it. Plus as stated before, I have to special order in my Rutte Dry Gin. Had all exact ingredients was listed. I found it not as boozy as stated with a beautifully blended spirit mix!!! I’m in heaven !
