Originally, grenadine was syrup flavoured with pomegranate. Sadly, most of today's commercially available grenadine syrups are flavoured with red berries...
Have made my own a couple of times with bottled pomegranate juice. Somewhat disappointed with the unappealing brownish colour in the cocktails made with it. Thinking about the Monin syrups but am unsure whether to go for the Grenadine syrup (apparently without pomegranate) or the Pomegranate syrup. Any thoughts here?
May have to borrow a decent citrus press…
I bought a pillar press off eBay I think, for about $100 Australian. Also brilliant when doing large quantities of orange juice, or pineapple juice, though I did end up getting an electric juicer for pineapple and ginger specifically (second hand Breville) and it’s been excellent.
Using a lever-action pillar press like the one in the photo above is the easiest way to squeeze pomegranate juice, and fresh juice makes the best grenadine. (But won't add the colour imparted by commercial brands such as Monin.)
