I made it with Scarlet Ibis rum, because I had an open bottle I hadn't used in awhile and wanted to be sure it wasn't going bad. Besides the Amaro Lucano, the recipe calls for Amaro Meletti, which I don't have. With a high- (though not over-)proof rum like Ibis I thought the second amaro should be dark and substantial and not Averna, which Clapham or Difford could have specified as alternatives if they'd wanted to. After surveying (and tasting) my in-house options I went with Amaro Bellini, which I think worked well with and complemented the Lucano. This drink is as much about your choice of amaro(s) as it is about your rum.
Not sure about other rums but Havana 7 certainly works. It provides a nice roast note that's almost smoky with the other amari. Overall it's just a nice, dark drink suitable for the early autumn evenings.
