Sub par, no matter how many variations you make. Don't drive yourself crazy... The best shake I had was: 50 ml white rum, 60 ml pineapple, 15 ml Tempus Fugit cacao, 5 ml Luxardo Espresso... I made a version with even parts of the Luxardo and cacao at increased measures and the coffee was too much. You've been warned... Still seems like it's missing some subtle background colors via bitters or maybe a rum agricole or cachaca would flesh it out. Avoid more than a drop of saline. Good luck (yuck).
I really liked this. Went very well with a spicy dinner. Did use a variety of rums - 1/2 Barbados white, 1/4 Barbados dark, and 1/4 overproof white. It was wonderful. Looking at the recipe, it need more rum flavour.
As a born and raised Torontonian, this drink’s origin is pretty interesting to me. Despite its low rating from others I found it very lovely! Wonder how it might taste with coconut oil-washed rum...
