I prefer this with a few drops of 20:80 saline and either mezcal or a split base of reposado and mezcal. I upped the grenadine slightly since blended free dine is less concentrated than cooked grenadine.
Too much fruity-candy overtones though, thankfully, it's not at all that sweet... I did use a basic blanco tequila, which clearly doesn't work in this... I'm a big fan of the tequila-pom-lime blend, but I hesitate to rush to add agave syrup to burst top notes... For my tastes, tequila will always beg for saline accents... This recipe is boldly pom-forward, and I would love to play with this to hope to bloom some of the dormant potential of the recipe.
Excellent drink, and simple too. Always prefer less ingredients so you can taste them all. I did use packaged pomegranate juice, but it didn't seem to suffer, and juicing your own pomegranates is always a pain in the wotsit. Tart, yes, but the grenadine sweetens it up perfectly, just enough. Added to my favourites about 4 seconds after the first sip.
This was perfect over the holidays with a Mexican dinner. Great colour and not too sweet. We like our Margaritas on the tart side, and this was perfect.
