This drink must live or die depending on the use and/or quality of the garnish. Where does one procure a pickled f'n walnut?! It's existence is news to me... Cocchi di Torino and a generic VSOP Cognac at these specs resulted in boredom.

Numerous brands of jarred picked walnuts are available. e.g. Opies via Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Opies-Pickled-Walnuts/dp/B00KM5673W

The photo of the drink baffles me. What's up with the apparent foam top and the ebony Pacman fruitlessly trying to bite through the glass to get a sip?

Absolute disappointment. Couldn't even taste any vermouth. Need a vermouth and soda now.

This dates back much earlier than Trader Vic: it is included in both MacElhone books (ABC of Mixing Cocktails and Barflies & Cocktails), Savoy Cocktail Book, and Boothby’s 1934 edition of World Drinks and How to Mix Them.

Thanks, James. The earliest reference I can find is in 1923 Harry of Ciro’s ABC of Mixing Cocktails.
