In 1976, after studying chemistry and physics, Ken Grossman opened The Home Brew Shop in Chico, California. He was passionate about home brewing and his five-gallon batches of beer are where Sierra Nevada originates from. In 1979, Ken and co-founder Paul Camusi established a small brewery from dairy tanks, a soft-drink bottler and equipment salvaged from defunct breweries. Ken named the new brewery and its beer after his favourite hiking grounds - the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Ken's beers proved immensely popular and, in 1989, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company moved to its present site and a 100-barrel German-made copper brew house. Further expansion in 1997 brought the brewery's capacity to almost 800,000 barrels per year.
