The name of this cask strength and non-chill filtered Bowmore was inspired by its strength.

Prior to the invention of the first hydrometer by Bartholomew Sikes in 1816, alcohol was tested for 'proof' by dampening gunpowder and then testing to see if it would still light. Thus that strength, equivalent to 57.15% alc./vol. became 100°Proof on the Sykes scale. Incidentally the British Navy conducted their own tests with the new hydrometer by testing samples of 100 Navy rums diluted and tested according to the gun powder test and found the average to be equivalent to 54.57% alc./vol., so that became the standard strength for British Navy rum.

Appearance:

Clear, light golden amber.

Aroma:

Surprisingly delicate, salty seaside air with oak smoked grilled nann bread and faint crème anglaise.

Taste:

Slightly sweet, smoky palate - like the nose is surprisingly delicate as smoky Islay beasts go - with sweet peat, creamy vanilla, lemon grass and light clove spice.

Aftertaste:

Smoky, char-grilled corn-on-the-cob dusted with lingering spice.
