History:

Probably named after Frank O'Hara, whose 1964 poem The Day Lady Died about the death of Billie Holiday, includes the verse, "and for Mike I just stroll into the Park Lane Liquor Store and ask for a bottle of Strega and then I go back where I came from to 6th Avenue and the tobacconist in the Ziegfeld Theatre and casually ask for a carton of Gauloises and a carton of Picayunes, and a New York Post with her face on it."

Alcohol content:

  • 1.6 standard drinks
  • 32.31% alc./vol. (32.31° proof)
  • 22.6 grams of pure alcohol

Re: the name, I suspect this is in reference to O'Hara's poem "The Day Lady Died" (about the death of Billie Holiday) which includes the line "and for Mike I just stroll into the PARK LANE / Liquor Store and ask for a bottle of Strega" -- that plus O'Hara's noted martini consumption (well, really, the man drank everything, but this is the '60s New York avant-garde art scene we're talking about here) seems likely to be the source of this (excellent!) combination.

Sadly I have notes or further information on this cocktails origin. I guess it was made by or for Frank O'Hara, the New York poet.

For a two ingredient cocktail, it's surprisingly delicious. Added to my favourites.
