Introduced in 1981, ‘Tarhun’ and ‘Baykal’ are popular lemonades in Russia, both are bright green and flavoured with tarragon. They were developed for the Moscow Olympic Games as an alternative to Coke and Pepsi as American products were banned due to America’s boycott of The Games.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 27/03/2012

Appearance

Slightly cloudy, verdant green.

Aroma

Does indeed smell of tarragon - slightly hamster cage with faint aniseed, rosemary and cardamom.

Taste

Tarragon and black liquorice with faint fennel. Tarragon has a slight aniseed note and is related to wormwood, add the green hue of this syrup and the flavour is strangely reminiscent of absinthe.

Aftertaste

Tarragon, black liquorice and cucumber skin.
