Amazing cocktail. Used tequila reposado swapping 5 ml with cognac (had no tequila anejo), otherwise as in recipe. Came out really good. Love this mellow, fullfilling, old fashioned drink!

Try using chocolate bitters of some kind (I've been using Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters) it makes for a wonderful flavor.

Thanks! The shop in the link is down. So can’t buy them here in the US until I go to England in the fall. Any more guidance on what bitters to mix along with lavender make margarita bitters, would be much appreciated.

I've just checked and link to cocktailier.com, the USA distributor, is working on our Margarita Bitters page and they have stocks.

I don't have Margarita Bitters and Angostura are not my favourite, so tried 8 drops of Bob's Chocolate Bitters instead - worked a treat for me

What bitters, along with lavender, can I mix to get closest to margarita bitters? I can't buy margarita bitters in the USA.

Our Margarita Bitters are more complex than that and happily are available in the USA from cocktailier.com. Please click Difford's Margarita Bitters in the recipe above to go to our page with direct link to USA store.

"... Dont have margarita bitters then angostura aroma..."
What about lavender bitter? Is this a good substitution?

Yes, I'd try 4 drops rather than 8.

This is outstanding. The Difford's Margarita bitters make this burst with flavour. The anejo tequila comes across very mellow. Allow this cocktail to breath and blend. You will be rewarded with a very plesant surprise.

This really is more than the sum of its parts. A great drink in which the tequila punch is forced to sneak up on you, worth all the stirring and ice-adding even if, like me, you are thinking "Why is he making me do this" while doing it.
