I felt it needed some bitter to balance the drink. I tried peach and it gave it better balance and a little more complex flavour. Obviously the sweetness of your coconut water brand will determine if it needs more balance. I think it would also work good with pineapple, lime, mango or banana bitters.

I originally made this with Havana Club Puerto Rican rum and it was not great. (I had to added more lime juice to make it palatable for me...) I just tried it with Plantation 3 Stars and it's much improved! Good if you want something simple and rum-forward. Probably great on a hot day.

Peter, I just had a similar experience using Brugal Extra Dry. Luckily, I did also have Plantation 3 Stars on hand, and that was much better, though I'm still not floored by this drink. I would think extra lime helps, like you suggested.

I'm curious to try this with a "nice" coconut rum (something like Koloa)...

Quite a ‘clean’ taste - the homeopathic lime really works to give a subtle kick. Dialled back the sugar syrup but then I usually do

Many thanks, Sally. Agreed! better with a 1/3rd less sugar - I've reduced accordingly.

Thanks Tessa. I've added a link to the Caribeño above.

Far better balanced that the Caribeño which has the same ingredients in drastically different proportions. Very rum forward, but I would make again it when I was in the mood for something this boozy.
