Appease the Cheese

So we are drinking an...

Appease the Cheese

"You can't make everyone happy. You're not cheese". How true. And particularly pertinent today as we celebrate one of the world's most beloved foods.

Created as a means by which to store milk, it's thought that cheese production began some 7,000 years ago, though as this predates recorded history, it's not actually known where cheese originated. Today however, it is undoubtedly one of the most popular dairy products worldwide, with almost 2,000 different cheeses available, each with its own unique flavour and texture.

Did you know?

  • A giant wheel of Cheddar cheese was given to Queen Victoria as a wedding gift in 1840.
  • Mice don't actually like cheese. They're not keen on its strong 'odour'.
  • Global cheese production exceeds the combined worldwide production of coffee, tobacco, tea and cocoa beans.
  • Approximately 10 pounds of milk is required to make just one pound of cheese.
  • The most popular cheese-based dish in the USA is of course Mac and Cheese.

So today, let's have a 'gouda' time and celebrate cheese in style. Be sure to Appease the Cheese!

U.S. Presidential Inauguration Day

Every four years on 20th January, a new U.S. President is sworn in, on an inauguration day which is set by law. Election Day is always the Tuesday after the first Monday in November and Inauguration Day is always 20th January.

Presidential Inauguration Day was on 4th March from 1793-1933. Back then, it was a bit different though - George Washington's speech was just 135 words long! Modest celebrations like that are out of the question now. In 1809 an inaugural ball was introduced, and since then, the event has grown and grown, with days of parades, prayers and presentations.

On this day in 2009, Barack Obama made history by being the first president to fail to say the oath correctly, so he had to repeat it the following day, and wasn't officially sworn in as the 44th President until 21 January.

We're going to resist the temptation to take the Mickey out of Trump or American politics - even Sarah Palin. Instead, we're going to suggest a Mr President cocktail or perhaps an El Presidente.
