National Corn Chip Day

Corn 'n' Oil

So we are drinking a...

Corn 'n' Oil

Happy National Corn Chip Day! Today we celebrate one of the most iconic snack foods of all time. Whether you're a fan of traditional corn chips or you prefer a more modern twist, there's no denying the deliciousness of this crispy, crunchy treat.

The story goes that back in 1932, a man named C.E 'Elmer' Doolin who was travelling in San Antonio, USA, purchased a bag of fried corn chips and enjoyed them so much, he pawned his mother's wedding ring to buy the rights to the recipe. He began selling them from the back of his Model T Ford before mass-producing them under the name of Frito Corn Chips. Needless to say, they were a hit and the company Doolin founded is now the largest manufacturer of corn chips in the USA. Hopefully, he replaced his mother's jewellery once he hit the big time!

So, what exactly makes corn chips so special? For starters, they're made from corn, a staple food in many cultures around the world. This gives them a unique flavour and texture that's hard to beat. Plus, they're versatile - you can enjoy them on their own or use them as a base for all sorts of delicious toppings and dips.

Of course, no celebration of corn chips would be complete without mentioning the classic pairing: salsa. There's just something about the combination of spicy salsa and cool sour cream that makes corn chips irresistible. But don't let tradition hold you back - feel free to experiment with other dips and toppings. How about a cheese beer dip? Crumbled tofu? Or maybe a sriracha sour cream.

But perhaps the best thing about corn chips is their ability to bring people together. Whether you're munching on them at a party or sharing a bag for movie night, corn chips are the ultimate snack for bonding. Much like cocktails such as the Corn 'n' Oil.

The Victoria Cross' birthday

It was on this day back in 1856 that Queen Victoria established the Victoria Cross which is the highest award that a British or commonwealth serviceperson can receive.

It's awarded for "most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy." On average less than ten are awarded each year.

Tonight we're going to mix a Victorian Lemonade, and commemorate Victoria Cross recipients and their heroism. A great reason for a sincere toast.

Today is National Curmudgeon Day

Grumpy faces and sour comebacks at the ready! Today is National Curmudgeon Day, a day worth everything but celebrating. Curmudgeonliness is as British as cricket, whinging, builder's tea and talking about the weather, and if you put the grinch into Christmas this year, then today is for you.

We recommend you celebrate by staying home, not going anywhere, and finding stuff to complain about. If you're of a vintage that allows such things, we recommend also identifying topics that were better in the old days. And, should you have to work tonight, we recommend you channel your inner Norman Balon. We will be sitting in, drinking an aptly named but inappropriately benevolence-inducing Smoky Old Bastard. Cheers!
