Try it stirred instead of shaken. Totally changes the flavors and you get a beautiful purple hue.
Ooh trying this today, thank you!

I'd love to see more Viet-y cocktails using pandan. I have a recipe for one using tangerine juice, umeshu, pandan extract, and another key ingredient that I'm forgetting. It's low ABV and I tasted it first at Sauvage Coquetels in Lyon, France. The owner (Pierrick) changes the menu seasonally and always has really inventive (but not gimmicky) mixes. It's a low-ABV bar mostly. I'm normally not a fruity/sweet cocktail drinker, but his was fabulous.
This is so weird. My name is Jackie and I'm (half) Vietnamese >.
Loved it, though messed up the egg foamy part on the first try. Tried again and it was a lovely refreshing treat. Bravo!
We have a new variation for 2023 from the US. The Indictment Cocktail. All the same White Russian ingredients but with a thin orange skin garnish, as well as some bling bling gold leaf to class it up!
Simon, do you have a preference for crème de violette? I have three :/ all very different. A Giffard's (more syrupy but is in fact CdeV); Tempus Fugit (from here in Switzerland, gives a beautiful color but a more 'fade' aroma); and one from Distiillerie Salamandre in France. I recall there was an Austrian brand that came out in the early- to mid- 2000s that was maybe the 1st CdeV exported into the US since a long time. Any other brands you like? My violette collection cannot be big enough! :P
10 stars for this one! About as sweet as I get for cocktails, enjoyed the unusual pairings of liqueurs.
Looking for more uses for the Martini Rosato I have, seems to work nicely in this aperitivo! I thought with the Suze it might be 'écoeurant' but it is nice and refreshing. A little bitterness and a lighter dose of that smoke and petrol (I enjoy it haha yes sniffing around gas pumps) funkiness of Del Maguey Vida. Might be the particular Mezcal I used (Amores).
Will try again with the champagne top up :)
Watching the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 NBA playoffs quaffing this haha. This is really sursprising, thought it would be too sweet but it's perfect! If I have enough of them and I will forget we let Chris Chiozza play this year. California LOVE!
It's fitting that my birthday is on the anniversary of the beginning of the repeal of Prohibition :P
Was listening to 1980 R.E.M. today and had to find a cocktail with the word 'Georgia' in it :D A lucky find, really lovely!
I tried this without the tamarind, hmm, I think next time a little acidity will in fact not be a bad idea! Even shaken with lime juice instead of the tamarind? Maybe reduce the rosato a little too. Will experiment, as I think the rosato needs a little brightness :) Interesting cocktail though!
Felt a bit weird pouring a lovely 15yo into a mixing glass, but I have to say that is bloody nice, one might even say it is excellent.
I see what you did there ;)
Made this per the original recipe, woo boozy! Nice little aperitif, enjoyed the hint of salt.
Bravo! Wow, what a surprising mélange. Although I did do some tweaking. I don't have lavender bitters, so added a tiny amount of crème de violette (maybe 1/3 bar spoon) and the liquid I made from (don't laugh) melting an original Ricola cough drop in water HAHA. I thought the violette plus herbal + slightly minty notes of the Ricola would produce something close to lavender! And it worked :P Great recipe, Simon, new top 10!
Probably in my top 5 favorite cocktails. Mr. Burns was also quite a writer of hilarious bawdy poetry!
Lovely story :) I added another 5ml of clémentine juice, was hidden certainly by the Campari. A nice slightly more refreshing take on the Negroni!
Hm. I thought I would surely love this, being it contains my 3 favorite French alcohols, but somehow it seems to be missing something. I even tried giving it a stir once the ice was in to see if the dissolved sugar cube would improve it. Might need...more Angostura? Acid? It's kind of flat as it is. Needs brightness. Maybe a simple lemon twist would do it. Will experiment. Thank you!
Love this! of course, had to sub things- Distillerie Salamandre Crème de violette; homemade crème de cacao; Dolin sweet vermouth; Noilly Prat dry vermouth. It's always surprising what chocolate can really pair well with. In this case violette (check Rose By Any Other Name, too!) and also Chartreuse Vert. Lovely and low ABV!
Oops, j'ai oublié :P And I live in France haha. I did have a cocktail with cognac, Cointreau, and Nouilly Pratt dry, so it kind of counts!
Very boozy, a really lovely sipper.
I used Myer's and Averna, all that I had on hand. I might up the acidity a bit next time, but overall pleasant and unexpected!
I have fuzzy memories of drinking too many of these on my 21st birthday in San Francisco O_o
I do think the ingredients used were not very high-quality :D I will revisit this with the recommended alcohols here and hopefully create a better memory of this cocktail! Now that we're adults...
