Not to be confused with their more bitter and alcoholic siblings, red bitter liqueurs, these similarly coloured aperitivo liqueurs are altogether lighter in style and are typically 11% to 18% alc./vol..
By far the leading brand, both in its Italian domestic market and internationally, is Aperol which is owned by Campari. However, other brands enjoy regional popularity, such as Select in Venice and the Veneto region.
The popularity of the Aperitivo Spritz, also closely identified with Venice, has led to the emergence of many me-too brands produced around the world, some better than others but all lacking the credibility of the long-established Italian classics. That said, some of the new challenger brands are delicious.
