Very full-bodied, used Rittenhouse and standard M&R vermouth …uh—oh …accidently used angostura reg. Instead…..well a good reason to have another with Orange bitters!
This is a lovely cocktail, that can act as both an aperitif and digestif. The gin lifts this from a dark and broody cocktail to a bright and light one. Depending on how you want to serve it you should make sure your ingredients serve your needs.
After sipping it for a bit I've come to realise that I might've used a slightly too good gin. The gin I used was Hernö's and, while great, slightly overpowered the other components. To me the drink was on the dry side, verging on an aperitif. Again, make sure you use ingredients you like, especially gin and vermouth.
I think the vermouth is key here and can make or break it. Used a somewhat less than fresh bottle and dragged the whole thing down, though still 4 stars. With a fresh bottle of carpano (prob slightly overkill) it sang, solid 5 stars.
Revisiting, and with better ingredients. Seriously good cocktail. Herbal, spicy, fruity and bitter sweet, with richness from the cognac. Will definitely be having again, and serving to friends.
Almost too many flavours going on here for my simple palate! As a gin lover, added an extra splash of Mr H savoury style dry gin, which balanced it nicely for me. I imagine a whisky or cognac lover could do the same with an extra splash. Five stars well deserved.
We had this today for our aperitif. We both found it amazing and gave it a 4.5. We were talking about people we know from social media and who we would like to have a drink with, and amongst a few, my husband said, Simon Diffords lol
Made it just as specified but served it in old-fashioned glasses with a big ice cube and lemon twist. Good balance of rye + gin + vermouth bitter and spices with just enough sweetness. Great entry on the old-timey, equal-parts-of-everything cocktail list.
