I find that a few muddled thin slices of fresh ginger works better for me. Only need to have a honey syrup on hand as well then.

Today I decided to actually read The Savoy Cocktail Book cover to cover for the first time. Came across the ‘Flu Cocktail which is Canadian Club, ginger, lemon, rich simple. I’m guessing it must have inspired the Penicillin? Not sure if I’ve ever seen the two cocktails linked before

I've also not noticed the Flu Cocktail in The Savoy book before. It does indeed resemble the Penicillin Cocktail but Craddock's "but do not ice" suggests he served the Flu Cocktail at room temperature to guests as a cure.

Bloody truly awful. Like medicine, in the worst possible way. Urgh.

Just incase anyone is considering King’s Ginger vs Ginger syrup opt for the latter. I bought a bottle of King’s to try out this version but honestly it was a rather weak incarnation of Ross’s recipe and lacked the right mouthfeel.

Reluctantly I agree. The Kings Ginger doesn’t really come through at 15ml, better at 20ml.

Does anyone know Sam's preferred Blended Scotch for this recipe?

Distinguished Spirits has a indepth video about it on youtube, that actually has the correct specs whiskey and method. Which I can confirm are correct thanks to having spoken with former Milk and Honey bartenders on the subject.

This one is all about the fresh ginger juice. Surely Kings doesn’t do it justice? Starting today this is how I intend to survive Covid through the winter.

Will the Islay single malt make that much of a difference? What if I use 67.5ml of some peated blended scotch?

The Islay whisky contributes massively to this cocktail. Without it, you'll still have a tasty drink but it will lack Islay's signature smoky peaty notes. I favour Lagavulin 16 year old.
