Strong, flavoursome navy rum with a splash of scurvy-inhibiting lime. Properly mixed at the right dilution, this is a great drink. However, too many and...
Tried it yet again, this time with a split base of sugar and honey. Not as good as sugar in my opinion. It's the Grog you give to really young palates (myself included), but not something a discerning bone-dry drinker would love. Great eitherway for me. Both are better than the brown sugar version though.
Retried this drink. Turns out it is just the sugar syrup as to why it feels underwhelming. Now with the standard sugar syrup, the lime comes through so much more, the pungent burnt caramel of the rum is so much more prominent. Really nice now. Gotta try the split honey and sugar version next time.

For folks wary of 60ml/2oz of 56% ABV rum, I've now made this by simply scaling it down to 40ml and serving in a regular old-fashioned glass. Works great.
Being a major rum drinker, I have had grogs all over. This is the basics of the grog and a very good recipe. I did use 114 proof Navy Grog Rum. It is a wonderful drink and very refreshing.
