A very good cocktail, but I think the green Chartreuse is just a little too much for the mezcal to match - the smokiness is lost in the mass of Chartreuse botanicals and spices, with the tart lime accented by the maraschino emerging late in the taste.

One of the more underwhelming riffs on a Last Word. The mezcal just laying on the other ingredients like years of cigarette smoke on cheap upholstery.

Apart from the garnish and the order in which the ingredients are listed, how is this different from a Closing Argument? Precisely the same ingredients in the same volumes. And yet the Closing Argument receives a higher rating. Alchemy indeed. Or am I missing something?

Oh, apologies, I now see that this was addressed in previous comments. But my question and puzzlement about the different ratings stands, I think.

This is delicious with Vicario Monk's Secret liqueur in place of Chartreuse verte. It adds a similar herbal complexity with a distinct, more assertive flavour profile, which would overpower the juniper in a Last Word, but plays nicely with the mezcal here, in my opinion.

This is the same (both ingredients and proportions) as the Closing Argument - the cocktail recipe, that's it, except for the garnish.

Agreed. Just as the Picador is the same as the Margarita but in this case, I know the Picador came first. I don't know who created the Closing Argument or when. I've added a link between the two drinks under Variation above.
