Coffee farming in Kenya

Patrick Mutua is a bartender in Nairobi, Kenya.

Through his Better Drinking project, Patrick shines a light on the coffee farmers in his hometown Kangundo. What was once an affluent job, coffee farming no longer produces big profits for the farmers. One cause of this, Patrick highlights, is due to the intermediaries between coffee farmers and consumers.

Patrick now works directly with a coffee farmer who makes quality Arabica coffee. The direct relationship benefits the farmer by removing the intermediary, therefore increasing profits.

On his return to Nairobi, Patrick gathered his friends and fellow bartenders to share his knowledge on the coffee farmers in Kangundo and encouraged them to start direct relationships with coffee growers. He also gave them a tutorial on home roasted coffee beans to provide guests with a better drinking experience.
