National App Day

Apple Mac

So we are drinking an...

Apple Mac

As there is now an app for everything (our website is designed to resemble an app on your phone), why not celebrate their revolutionary effect on our lives and the tech industry with a national day?

In the 1980's a London company called Psion released the first PDA device called the Psion Organiser that had features such as a calculator and contacts. This set the ball rolling and apps have developed quickly into what we know and use today.

Still relatively new in the grand scheme of things, apps have grown quickly, made our lives easier in many ways, created jobs, given us platforms to connect, express ourselves and learn. Used mostly on our phones, they are at our fingertips 24/7. Unsurprisingly, social media apps reign supreme in the most downloaded lists.

As it was Steve Jobs who first had the idea to create an 'App Store' which when released featured around 500 apps and now contains millions, we're drinking an Apple Mac to celebrate.

International Mountain Day

Sometimes it feels as though the UN has a day for everything. And, lo and behold, today is Mountain Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 2003 to encourage sustainable development in mountains. It's a chance for us all to contemplate the role of mountains in our lives, from pristine climbing peaks and powder-rich ski resorts to rolling, forested hills.

Mountain forests provide the watersheds for freshwater for more than half the world's people and help protect against climate change. Sadly, they are disappearing, thanks to human action, almost as fast as the glaciers. Depressing stuff, especially during the season of office party hell. We do apologise.

May we recommend you lift your spirits with a Monte Cassino, a cocktail named for an Italian slab of rock topped with an apparently impenetrable monastery?
