Tried this with lime juice instead of lemon and it is rather good, sparkly fresh and not sugary at all

The quickest way to ruin champagne. Cassis is lovely but not in this. The luxurious, rich flavour of the champagne is made a chav drink with an overwhelming confected blackcurrant flavour.
Tried this with the spiced version of navy strength rum that Pusser's make, it is fantastic. By chance we had warm stollen to eat alongside, actually goes rather well indeed!
This cocktail is great if you want a mouthful of bitter. That’s all it is. Bitter. It was palatable after I dumped in almost an equal measure of simple syrup. If you like a powerful bitter flavor profile in your drinks you’ll be happy with this.
I agree, this is nothing but unpleasantly bitter.
As another said, lovely without the egg white, added some daiquiri bitters too, fantastic.
I love this, made it using the exact ingredients suggested here. It is incredibly complex and changes flavour as you take each sip and seriously shows off the quality of the cognac and rye. I used the 30ml of each recipe but still with 2 dashes of Peychaud's as I'm not keen on Benedictine overpowering a drink.
