Would love to try this but can’t justify purchasing a real pink grapefruit at the exorbitant price today. Has anyone tried cheating with a pink grapefruit mixer (Fever Tree, eg) instead of juice + club soda?

I love this cocktail. Requires a good thick Grenadine like Portland Syrups (created with American bartender/youtuber Anders Erickson). Recently tried adding just a splash of Mezcal to the mix which cuts some of the sweetness. Muy bueno!
My first Italicus cocktail, after my bartender daughter highly recommended we stock a bottle. Delicious! And I may have found a flavor solution to the MIA mixer Bitter Lemon by Schweppes (only by Schweppes), my go-to for G&”T” Can’t wait to try more concoctions with Italicus!
The full 1/2 oz of lime was too sour for my taste. Next time I’ll cut that by half. I like the bourbon - allspice - angostura blend.
Twist the Lion’s Tail: 2 oz Bourbon, 1/2 oz Allspice Dram, 1/2 oz Averna Amaro, 1/2 oz Lemon Juice. Shaken with ice. Added a dried Orange slice. Spicy, autumnal, not as sour and didn’t need the sugar syrup.

I’m not a big Campari fan so I subbed Nonnino Amaro and it was fantastic. I would guess the flavor profile changes a lot with the bitter Campari.
Would it be a travesty to sub Averna for the Nonino ?
We love making it with Averna. Not as prettily orange, but very delicious and a bit more robust.
