History:

This recipe was created in January 2026 by Paul King, a fellow Discerning Drinker, after he "Had to substitute the Green Chartreuse with Italicus" while making Dominic Venegas' Gypsy No. 1. We've adopted the recipe with a subtle tweak and named it Gypsy Rosolio, perhaps remembering the name of Gypsy Rose Lee (born Rose Louise Hovick, 1911 -1970), the famed American burlesque entertainer, stripper, actress, author, playwright and vedette.

Nutrition:

One serving of Gypsy Rosolio contains 167 calories

Alcohol content:

  • 1.4 standard drinks
  • 20.05% alc./vol. (40.1° proof)
  • 19.4 grams of pure alcohol

My first Italicus cocktail, after my bartender daughter highly recommended we stock a bottle. Delicious! And I may have found a flavor solution to the MIA mixer Bitter Lemon by Schweppes (only by Schweppes), my go-to for G&”T” Can’t wait to try more concoctions with Italicus!

I was expecting this to be too sweet for my taste, but the gin and lime really balance the liqueurs, and nothing is lost. A real delight!

I do love Bergamot Liqueur and find it an interesting swap for Cointreau when you want the Orange but with more herby and bitter notes.
This is exactly what this drink provides. Provided that mouth cleansing bite for a first drink.

I thought the Gypsy No1 was on the border of a Last Word riff and this is on the border of *not* being a Last Word riff. It's still good, I like bergamot. It carries a lot of similarities to its sister - mainly being less complex than a LW and being delicious- but it's a good alternative if Chartreuse isn't readily available. You obviously won't get the herbal complexity from the Chartreuse but if you use a good gin you can make up for it.
