Leap Year Martini

This cocktail sits on our database waiting for attention once every four years so don't miss today's Leap Year Cocktail, created by Harry Craddock for the Leap Year celebrations at the London Savoy in 1928.

The calendar year is based on the astronomical year but because the astronomical year doesn't repeat in whole days, over time, the two fall out of sync. This is corrected by adding a day to the year every four years. It's called a leap year because while a fixed date advances one day of the week from one year to the next, in a leap year it advances by two - it leaps over a day in the week. So, if Christmas is on Friday one year it will be on Saturday the next, but if it was a leap year it would jump to Monday.

If you've clicked and opened this page on say the 27th or 28th of a none leap year, then you've a foretaste of what to look forward to on 29th February 2028, 2032, 2036...
