On this day in 2013, Pope Benedict became the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415, and the first to do so of his own initiative since 1294.
While most popes carry on till the day they die, Benedict decided that his declining health meant he needed to step aside. Pope from April 2005, the former Joseph Ratzinger was ordained as a priest in 1951 in his native Bavaria. Now known as pope emeritus, Benedict retains the style of His Holiness, and the title of Pope, and continues to dress in papal white.
We're toasting his good sense of knowing when enough is enough with a Bénédictine Conversion.
