Today in 1836 Sam Houston became the first elected president of the Republic of Texas, which had declared its independence from Mexico a year previously and officially formed the Republic of Texas in March 1836.
Texas is one of very few US states to have been an independent country, though it would exist as a republic for just a decade. Its existence sprang from a revolution in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas, where citizens objected (among other things) to having to adopt Catholicism. The Texas Revolution had lasted for a year, but Mexico didn't recognise its independence, and conflicts continued for a further decade or so - pretty much until Texas gave up its independence and joined the United States, officially becoming the State of Texas in 1846.
Today, we'll be raising a glass to Texas, and Texans, with a Texsun cocktail.
