History

In Italy this is called an Americano Branco and it is under this name that it features in Elvezio Grassi's 1936 book Mille Misture. Although an Italian aperitivo, it is perhaps more popular in Argentina, particularly the cantinas and cafés of Buenos Aires where it is called a Ferroviario or sometimes a "Fernet con Cinzano".

Americano Branca (Aperitivo).
Pour into an aperitif glass:
20% Fernet Branca
30% Vermouth Rosso Torino
50% Fresh Seltzer
Serve with lemon peel.

Elvezio Grassi, Mille Misture, 1936 (translated from Italian)

Review

A bittersweet, cleansing and revitalising digestivo.

AKA: Fernet con Cinzano

Shouldn't it be stirred, or have the ice put into the glass after pouring the ingredients in?

I'm confused. Is this considered to be an aperitivo, or a digestivo, or both?

I consider it both an aperitivo and digestivo.

That's very interesting. I really like the idea of a multipurpose cocktail.
