Flipping Good

Amelia Earheart once said that 'A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions', and we're keeping that at the forefront this 13th November, World Kindness Day.

Founded in 1998, World Kindness Day is observed across the globe and serves to promote acts of kindness on both small and large scales. Since the day's creation by the World Kindness Movement, the aim has been to build a kinder and more compassionate world.

Did you know there are actually scientific benefits to being kind? Doing something kind, or even witnessing a kindness, produces oxytocin (aka the love hormone), simultaneously lowering blood pressure and improving heart health. Harvard Business School also conducted research in 2010 which concluded that those who practised altruism were the happiest overall, with kindness lighting up the brain's pleasure and reward centres.

Why not celebrate the day yourself? Pay for someone else's coffee, donate to your favourite charity, or even just pay a stranger a compliment. You're guaranteed to feel great for it! Then celebrate your good deeds with something Flipping Good.

A Martini fanatic died this day

"You can no more keep a martini in the refrigerator than you can keep a kiss there. The proper union of gin and vermouth is a great and sudden glory; it is one of the happiest marriages on earth and one of the shortest-lived."

Academic, journalist, novelist, and bard of (some) American cocktails, Bernard DeVoto died on this day in 1955, leaving behind him one of the most cantankerous yet wonderfully written tributes to the cocktail ever: The Hour: A Cocktail Manifesto.

Whether or not you agree with some of his sterner prescriptions - he counts even the Manhattan as an abomination - the man's praise for the Martini wins our vote. We will be toasting Mr. DeVoto with a Dry Martini - as dry as we can possibly get it.

Despite his abuse of the Manhattan you may also want to toast with what's probably its ancestor, the Martinez, in our favourite variation, with Dutch jenever.
