World Nutella Day

Chocolate Negroni

So we are drinking a...

Chocolate Negroni

Is Nutella one of your guilty pleasures? If so, today is for you. For the shamelessly sugary gloop known as Nutella - we're sorry, the "delicious hazelnut spread that contains quality ingredients, such as skim milk and a hint of cocoa, that moms can serve as part of a balanced diet" - has its very own unofficial celebration day today: World Nutella Day.

Those behind this celebratory day recommend doing anything you can think of with Nutella, from making art with it to eating it with a spoon to setting up your very own Nutella porn site (no, they don't really recommend that but, yes, Nutella porn is a thing).

We are rather more partial to orange marmalade on our toast than Nutella, but as we do like a bit of chocolate in a cocktail from time to time, we are marking the occasion with an adequately adult Chocolate Negroni.

It's also William S. Burroughs' birthday

Poet, author, artist, performer and leading light of the Beat Generation, William S. Burroughs was born this day in 1914, in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Despite a longstanding heroin addiction that he wrote about regularly, and a fondness for vodka with flat cola, he made it to 83.

Burroughs worked with, hung out with and influenced artists from Allen Ginsberg to the Beatles, Andy Warhol to Patti Smith, Lou Reed to J.G. Ballard, and appears as a character in his friend Jack Kerouac's On the Road. Burroughs' life was marred with tragedy. He accidentally shot his wife dead during a booze-fuelled game of target practice in Mexico; their son, Billy Burroughs, also an author, would die of alcoholism aged only 33; one of his last journals, before he died, relates, miserably, how he failed them all.

In honour of a counter-cultural icon, we're marking his anniversary with an El Burro, an excellent take on the Mexican Mule created by the late, great Henry Besant.
