A fabulous brunch cocktail.
How you squeeze (and blend) your oranges is key to achieving the "fluffy" orange juice that makes this drink special. At...
Made with half/half blood and Cara oranges as that was what I had. Stunning colours! Tried subbing a third of the Campari for punt e mes to match the blood Orange, as it had worked well in a bloody negroni, but next time would just stick the Campari zing.
Simple and delicious! I doubled the simple syrup because I currently have some 1:1. I think next time I'll forego it altogether like some of the other users.
I'm also not sure the frothing was entirely necessary, by the time the drink was assembled there wasn't much of a froth, and half of it got mixed in with the Campari anyway. Either way it was lovely and I look forward to trying again without the simple!
I am impressed with how delicious this is for just two ingredients (I skipped the simple syrup). The orange juice mellows the campari bitterness without removing any of the flavors, makes it easier to enjoy its subtleties. I used a milk frother for the orange juice, worked great.
Round 2 : experimented with 35ml campari, 15 Galliano, 10 ml simple syrup and a 10ml gailliano float, yummy. If not into sweet drinks avoid simple syrup. Im calling it a Italian Sunrise ;)
I also used a high speed smoothie maker and it makes a simple drink extra special. I am not one for fine straining this, as it seems a little pointless when the drink goes in the blender. In fact the extra material probably encourages flocculation, and you get better froth.
Hand held milk frother doesn't even cost $10 but it works perfectly fine on 4oz of orange juice. Submerge, start, lift up to get a vortex going, et voila!
