Great aperitif. We used a California whiskey at 90 proof. Very flavourful and wonderful before dinner.

A few things...
1. I prefer half the vermouth, a 4:2:1 - this goes for Negronis as well.
2. Dump out your Martini vermouth, it pales in comparison to Dolin or another better vermouth.
3. I recommend trying it with Rye, and if you don't like Rye, then use something bottled in bond. A higher proof bourbon let's this drink get better and better with some slow sipping dilution.

From as many delicious cocktails that exist - this will always be my absolute favorite. Though any Last Word and riff comes a close second.

2:1:1 is on point for me. Also smoking it adds a nice touch :)

The bourbon helps smooth out the bitterness of the Campari more than gin IMO.

Worth a try, but I think you are better off with a Manhattan Sweet.

A year later I am much more enthusiastic, but the Rye Boulevardier is even better.

I think 2:1:1 is the more common modern ratio.
Also, a high-proof bourbon helps balance the sweet and bitter notes.

I am in the mood for this sometimes and it is quite good, but it doesn't have the magic balance of a negroni

I logged in specially just to like this post. I would love to find another drink with the perfection of the negroni. Let me know if one ever appears. Wings were fun but they weren’t the Beatles 😅
