Needs an edge…the rye doesn’t quite get there, and agree with below, the vermouth is a ghost in this drink. Not sad I tried it, won’t be likely to make it again.
Agreed summertime Manhattan it is. VERY easy drinking; deceptively not boozy. My cupboard was unaccountably batter of rye, so created a Frankstein combination Vulson unaged rye, wild Turkey 101 and Canadian club, which was pleasantly not completely offensive. Will revisit with actual rye.
This was a difficult one. It needs to be ice cold. Otherwise, the savouriness of the rye and the dry vermouth make it too difficult to even be palatable. Definitely a 3.5* for me. Was hoping for great things considering the rating. I will say I used a smaller pour of Select Aperitif to compensate for no Aperol.
Fantastic Brooklyn riff! There are many, but this one is terrific. I cannot believe I've not had it before. Original used Chamomile infused rye. It is not needed, however.
Thought the Yellow Chartreuse would be drowned out but it provides a surprisingly pleasant herbal accent. The vermouth is actually the ingredient that's getting kind of drowned out. It obviously thins out the drink, and provides some needed acidity, but flavorwise it gets behind the rye.
Kind of fun cocktail. It's not just a riff on a Manhattan but also does something new with the bitter+rye+vermouth formula. I wish we could give a more granular score here because this, for me, is a solid 4.25/5.
Ohh I just remembered a cocktail that this reminded me of – the Montreal Cocktail. It's a severely underrated cocktail with equal parts rye, Aperol, Suze and gin. If you like this I'd definitely recommend trying that one out.
