I ran out of whiskey so I made this with cognac instead for a nice simple variation. Afterwards I made another addition - adding 1 fl oz of cream and an amarena cherry for a delightful dessert cocktail (shaken). More of a variation of a Brandy Alexander, but still delightful.

If you ask for an Old Fashioned in Wisconsin they ask “brandy or whiskey” and “Sweet or dry”. The brandy is almost always Korbel. The sweet has some Seven Up (lemonade), the dry has sweet and sour mix added. Both are quite a long drink.

My family either uses 7-up or Sprite and it is a long drink. I have one aunt who refers to these as 'truth serums' because they will get tongues wagging after about two.

I used De Kuyper brand for both the white and dark creme de cacao. Also added a variant with a few drops of chocolate bitters. This is also great with Branca Menta in place of one of the measures of creme de cacao.

This is fabulous with some Amarena Fabbri syrup mixed in. I used Italian brandy and panna fresca as half and half isn't available.

I used what I could get my hands on: Antica Distilleria Quaglia Violetta Liqueur as Creme de Violette is no where to be found. I added some syrup from Amarena Fabbri. David Selle's comment of adding the violette to the glass first and shaking the rest resulted in a delightful cocktail.

I tried it with both lime and lemon juice and prefer the lime (same with the 20th Century).

I’m going to go with the crowd and advocate for 10ml cacao and 8 drops chocolate bitters. As a chocolate lover, if it says chocolate I expect chocolate!

Rachel L

Agreed - I did the same.

For those who don't have pre-sweetened cranberry juice I added some agave syrup before shaking. Simply syrup would work too, but we rarely have that on hand.

Wanted to add that I made this is a tall glass with ice and filled to the top with sparkling mineral water. Not too big of a glass. Similar to a Negroni and soda water.

I used straight (unsweetened) cranberry juice. Enjoyed the crisp tartness. Far cry from the Cosmo's of my youth which were uber syrupy sweet. While using a sweetened cranberry juice has it's place, I prefer the briskness and pucker of straight up cranberry.

Absolutely lovely. I'm a fan of Campari. I admit I used a bit of Lyle's Golden syrup instead of simple syrup (used what I had on hand) and it worked just as wonderfully!

I enjoyed the original variation of brandy, dark creme de cacao and cream. I took Daryl's suggestion and added nutmeg. Will try cognac next time though!
