New drink picture looks great, thanks for fixing it!
Glad you added this one, Simon! Another fab recipe from Jeffrey Morganthaler, and a great use for that bottle of Aquavit gathering dust in the back of my liquor cabinet. I would like to nominate the Norwegian Wood for your "top 20" fall cocktail list!
Like some commenters below, I prefer a well-hued Aviation cocktail, but shaking the creme de Violette makes the color all but disappear. I have tried two approaches that generate the right appearance without substantively changing the cocktail. 1) Add the creme de violette to the chilled serving glass and pour the shaken ingredients over the top. 2) Add the creme de violette to the shaker *after* shaking the other ingredients and stir very briefly, then strain into the serving glass.
Another winner from Jeffrey Morganthaler! I don't think I've had a bad recipe from him. His Flannel Shirt and Norwegian Wood cocktails are great fall drinks too.
This original spec for this cocktail is a honeydew melon ball garnish as the light green melon more closely resembles the color of a tennis ball.
I find that shaking this cocktail results in a "cloudy" appearance where the pleasing color of the creme de violette is all but lost, but I don't like it stirred. So I shake the drink minus the creme de violette. Then add it to the glass and pour the shaken ingredients on top. Comes out looking (and tasting) great.
The original recipe calls for Vya Sweet Vermouth. I prefer it in this cocktail.
