A happy surprise sub for a gin Dry Martini. Buffalo Trace bourbon + Noilly Prat dry vermouth 2:1. No bitters at all but kalamata olives on a pick for garnish. Woof! Next up, Manhattan (sweet) same bourbon. Onward!

Hi John, Yes I knew Hem's rationale but was the 15:1 factual? And if it was, could one fault a commander if the principle saved lives? His own mens', of course. Well, whatever the truth may be, I'm enjoying a 5:1 Beefeater to Dolin Dry Gibson with 3 wee onions. Wishing you happy drinking. Best.

Will try Highland Park 12yo and Dolin Blanc later as an aperitif. It's an intriguing combo I never thought of as a less herbal Dry Manhattan. We shall see.

Hi Alan, the old established gin brands e.g. Gordon's, Tanqueray, Booths, Beefeater, Gilbey's are likely candidates however during wartime the officers probably drank what they could lay their hands on. There wasn't the proliferation of brands there is today.

Does anyone know what brand of gin -- pink or otherwise -- was drunk by Royal Navy officers in WWII? I was born in East London in 1942 and would dearly like to know. Thank you!

This may be heretical, especially on Rabbie Burns' Night, but sub Talisker 10yo malt for the rye for a smoky treat. Stir over a big ice cube. No need for the sugar syrup, says me.

Right ChrisM but adjusted half measures still incomplete? So for Nick & Nora: 37.5ml gin, 2.5ml absinthe but only 7.5ml dry vermouth? And no, cocktail hour is still to come. :)

Simon, old bean, this looks interestingly savoury/weird but the olive lemonade component appears twice in the recipe: two variations? BTW, browsing your guide is a happy evening here in Oregon, US. Keep up the good work!
