As the name suggests, orange bitters are an orange-flavoured style of cocktail bitters. They range from being almost alcohol free to 50% alc./vol., although most are 35 to 45% alc./vol. Intensely flavoured and bitter, mere drops or dashes are enough to influence a cocktail.
They tend to be flavoured with the peel of bitter Seville oranges with gentian, quinine and other herbal roots and barks, along with spices such as cardamom, coriander and caraway.
Orange bitters date back to the early 1900s, reaching their peak popularity in the early 20th century, and are consequently commonly found in cocktail recipes from that period.
