Napoleon Bonaparte, the military genius who made his way through the ranks of revolutionary France to eventually crown himself emperor, abdicated and was sent into exile on the island of Elba today in 1814.
Napoleon may have given the world the concept of the Napoleon Complex - by which short people make up for their lack of height with aggression - yet at around 1.68 metres (5 feet 6 inches), Napoleon wasn't especially short for his era.
Today's anniversary makes an excellent excuse to discover the splendid Napoleon Market, an elegant, approachable, rust-coloured drink that we're sure the great man would have appreciated.
