Ingredients:
23 oz White overproof rum (unaged Jamaican/funky)
23 oz Caribbean blended rum aged 6-10 years
23 oz Amaro Montenegro
13 oz Chilled water omit if using wet ice
× 1 1 serving

How to make:

  1. Select and pre-chill a Nick & Nora glass.
  2. Prepare garnish of orange zest twist.
  3. STIR all ingredients with ice.
  4. FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.
  5. EXPRESS orange zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

Review:

Rum funkiness and amaro bitterness combine in the bittersweet after-dinner sipper. For a less potent version use cachaça in place of the over-proof rum.

History:

Adapted from a recipe created by Jason E. Clapham at the St. Edward's MCR at Oxford, England. Originally made with Wray & Nephew overproof rum, Jason told us this cocktail is eponymously named for the Black River which runs through the Appleton Estate, where Wray & Nephew is distilled.

Great after-dinner drink. Use Rhum Clement Canne Bleue and Luxardo Amaro Abano (which added a peppery taste). Also added a few drops of Orange Bitters to give more of the Amaro Montenegro flavour.
