512 fl oz Cointreau L'Unique triple sec liqueur
512 fl oz Lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
16 fl oz Sugar syrup 'rich' (2 sugar to 1 water) 65.0°Brix

How to make

Glassware

Serve in a Coupe glass

Prepare

  1. Select and pre-chill a COUPE GLASS.
  2. Prepare garnish of lemon zest twist.

Method

  1. SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
  2. FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.

Garnish

  1. EXPRESS lemon zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

History

Adapted from a recipe in Harry Craddock's 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book.

Under his recipe: 1/8 lemon juice, 1/8 Cointreau, 3/8 dry gin and 3/8 brandy, Craddock states, "This it is that gives to Radio Announcers their peculiar enunciation. Three of them will produce oscillation, and after five it is possible to reach the osculation stage."

Didn't end up loving this one. The gin was overwhelmed by the cognac, making it a Sidecar, but with more bottles to fetch. Might try to slice the cognac down to 15ml and see if the gin takes more of an active role because I really like the idea of this cocktail.

Sits nicely with 5 ml roses simple syrup. I may biml ingrediants to make larger drink

Had to add 10ml of agave nectar to this which made a cocktail more in line with my tastes

Agreed, was way too sour! I've amended the recipe and added a spoon of sugar syrup (other sweeteners such as honey would also work well).
