Ingredients:
1 12 oz Straight rye whiskey (100 proof /50% alc./vol.)
1 oz Strucchi Rosso Vermouth
112 oz Amer Picon
1 dash Orange Bitters by Angostura
× 1 1 serving

How to make:

  1. Select and pre-chill a Nick & Nora glass.
  2. Prepare garnish of orange zest twist.
  3. STIR all ingredients with ice.
  4. FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.
  5. EXPRESS orange zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

Cuban Liberal

History:

The first known recipe for a Liberal cocktail appears in George Kappeler's 1895 Modern American Drinks. Versions of the Liberal then appear in Thos. Stuart's 1904 Stuart' s Fancy Drinks And How To Mix Them; Jacques Straub's 1913 Straub's Manual of Mixed Drinks; and Albert Stevens Crockett's 1931 Old Waldorf Bar Days.

Liberal Cocktail.
Fill a mixing-glass half-full fine ice, add one dash syrup, half a jigger Amer Picon bitters, half a jigger whiskey. Mix, strain into cocktail glass. A small piece of lemon peel on top. Serve.

A lovely drink. I think though it benefits from an orange zest twist as pictured as opposed to lemon called for in the recipe.
