Read about cocktail measures and measuring

Garnish: Orange zest twist

How to make:

STIR half the bourbon with three ice cubes (dry to the touch well-frozen ice, not wet ice) directly in serving glass. Add the rest of bourbon, sugar-free syrup, bitters and two more ice cubes. STIR some more and add another two ice cubes. And if you have room, add more ice before serving.

Strength & taste guide:

No alcohol
Medium
Boozy
Strength 7/10
Sweet
Medium
Dry/sour
Sweet to sour 5/10

Review:

Despite being made with a dash of sweetener rather than sugar this is a very palatable Old Fashioned and many will not be able to differentiate between the classic sugar-loaded version.

Adding aromatic bitters will help the cocktail's flavour but, depending on the bitters used, is likely to add trace amounts of sugar.

Thanks for the reply. I'm still puzzled by your "add whiskey", though, since you only list one measure of bourbon. Do you stir the bourbon with ice in a mixing glass and then strain or pour into a separate serving glass and add more to taste, or do you divide the one measure of bourbon and mix it in two separate steps?

Agreed. Was a little confusing. By whiskey, I meant the rest of the bourbon but I've amended to hopefully make more understandable.

This doesn't sound right. Stir bourbon with ice, then add (more) whiskey, then add sugar (not sugar-free) syrup? (I make a sugar-free Old Fashioned by muddling a packet of Equal or Splenda sugar-free sweetener in a rocks glass with a splash of water until it dissolves, then adding whiskey, bitters, and ice, and stirring. Garnish with orange peel and/or maraschino cherry. It works well with rye, bourbon, or Irish whiskey, depending on your taste.)

Thanks for pointing out. Method corrected to say "sugar-free syrup"

I think there is a typo in the description, the recipe states bourbon but the description only mentions rye.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've removed the reference to rye.
